Planning a Sports Banquet Program

The end of a sports season is a time to commemorate the team’s success, teamwork and dedication. When planning a sports banquet, the use of a program will allow you to have an organized event that runs smoothly. Consider including the following when creating a sports banquet program.

Opening Remarks

Every event needs an opening to welcome guests to the reception. The coach(es), the host, or a Director of Athletics make a great fit for delivering the opening remarks. This can also be an opportunity to highlight the order of events, which can also be aided by a printed program.

Dinner and a show

As this is a celebration, a meal adds a special touch to the occasion and allows guests to socialize with one another. The Iroquois Club offers a dinner menu specifically for sports banquet attendees to enjoy. Additionally, The Iroquois Club has audio and visual equipment available for rental that can be used to preview a highlight reel of the season for guests to watch during their meal.

Speakers

As a sports banquet celebrates the team’s players, it is important to involve the team as much as possible. Consider having a team captain or senior members speak about their experience with the team and how it impacted them. Other options for speakers include a team alumni, a local hero (such as a prominent community member), or a retired professional player.

Awards Presentation

Coaches have the opportunity to address each player’s contribution and hard work with an awards presentation. This presentation can begin with an overview of the season and follow with awards and certificates. Your team may give out the same awards each year, such as MVP, Best Serve, and Best Offensive Player. However, feel free to include fun honorary awards, like  Best Team Spirit, Best Attitude, or Best Injury.

Senior Recognition

If planning a banquet for high school athletes, you may want to set aside a time to recognize those who are graduating. Seniors can be honored by having teammates talk about their impact on the team and/or by using a video presentation complete with images from their time with the team. This section can be concluded by giving away senior gifts.

Coach Recognition

Similarly to senior recognition, coach recognition can involve a team captain or the team as a whole saying a few words to express their appreciation for their coach’s support and dedication to the team. The coach’s gift, such as flowers and a card signed by the team, would be presented at this time.

Closing Remarks

The closing remarks allow the host and/or coach(es) to thank those who have attended the soiree and supported the team. Additionally, the speaker may encourage team members to continue their dedication to the sport in the off-season.
