Planning a Holiday Work Party

Hosting a holiday work party gives employees time to celebrate the year’s successes and toast to the holiday season. Putting together the event does not need to be stressful if you allow for enough time for proper planning. It is important to keep the following items in mind once you start preparations:

Timing

The holidays are a hectic time, so consider picking a date in early December to avoid clashing with other pre-holiday activities, like last-minute Christmas shopping. In addition to the date, the time of party is just as important. Some companies choose to host their parties during work hours to avoid conflicts, but this may be difficult if you are allowing employees to bring a guest.

Theme

Consider thinking outside of the box with a fun themed party!  While the traditional route can be more formal holiday attire, Ugly Holiday Sweater Parties or Holiday movie themed soirées have become a fun trend that keeps the atmosphere light and casual. If you have trouble deciding, send out a poll to employees for their input or to provide additional suggestions.

Entertainment

Keep party-goers engaged by having a live band or DJ to get people moving and dancing. In addition to mingling, a gift exchange is a great way to add an additional perk to your party. Minute to Win It games will add a lighthearted competitive twist to the gathering.

Photography

Hiring a photographer is one way to make sure the party’s moments are captured from start to finish.  A photobooth is a great addition that allows guests to have even more fun with picture taking with the use of holiday props, hats and accessories. Or, a budget-friendly option is to set up a festive holiday backdrop for photo-ops.

Recognition

Considering this event takes place at the end of the year, appoint someone to give a toast or a short heartfelt speech for some year-end remarks. This can also be an opportunity to give out awards to employees who have performed exceptionally well or have gone the extra mile at work. Showcase employee appreciation by encouraging guests to nominate their coworkers for prespecified awards, like “Rookie of the Year” or “MVP,” and announce them during the event.
