Popular Wedding Trends by Decade

WHAT’S OLD? WHAT’S NEW?

From big poofy dresses to long sleek trains and veils, trends have constantly changed and left their mark in wedding fashion history. More specifically, in the 70s, 80s, and 90s we see three distinct representations of what a ceremony may have looked like in each decade.

THE 70S

Florals, hippies, and feathered hair dominated the fashion world in the ‘70s. Brides took to this theme by wearing flowy, draped gowns and crowned veils decorated with colorful flowers or greenery. We can also thank Bianca Jagger, ex-wife of The Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger, for the popularization of brides sporting white pants suits on their big day. Much like the attire, ceremonies demonstrated the admiration for nature as outdoor weddings grew increasingly common. You could also find popular soul, jazz, and disco music playing as guests celebrated the newlywed couple.

THE 80S

Weddings in the ‘80s called for a large shift in fashion. Where the ‘70s opted for simplicity, this decade embraced big princess-like dresses with shoulder pads, frills, and laced cuffs. As opposed to the decade before, couples chose more traditional venues for their wedding like churches and synagogues. If you were fortunate enough to attend a wedding in the ‘80s the entertainment was nothing short of amazing. Reception halls were filled with the sounds of many legendary artists ranging from Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ to Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ – two ballads that still pack the dance floor. THE 90S

The simpler, the better! At least that was the belief for most betrothed couples in the ‘90s. During this decade brides and grooms opted for sleeker, less-detailed gowns and suits. Instead, they focused more efforts on big updo hairstyles and bold makeup looks. Entertainment during this era was key as live bands became the music-of-choice to serenade newlyweds and their guests.
